Most dermatologic surgeries today are minimally invasive, performed in-office, and require only local anesthesia with little downtime. While some dermatologic surgical procedures are cosmetic, such as mole removal, this specialty also deals with diagnosing and treating skin cancer and cancerous lesions before they spread.

What Types of Dermatological Surgeries Do You Perform
Dr. Dennis Gross Dermatology performs several dermatological surgery procedures to treat everything from cysts and moles to skin cancer. If you have a suspicious or bothersome lesion, we may recommend one of the following:
Biopsies
A skin biopsy involves removing a small sample of the skin for closer examination to diagnose a mole or lesion. The sample will be analyzed in a lab to test if the suspicious lesion or mole is cancerous or caused by a skin disorder or infection.
Surgical Excision Procedures
A surgical excision is a simple procedure performed to surgically remove a malignant lesion, tumor, or mole from the skin. An excision may be necessary if a biopsy is abnormal or is read as squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, or basal cell carcinoma.
Cyst Removal
A cyst is a growth beneath the skin that accumulates bacteria and skin cells in a sack and grows slowly over time. Cyst removal can be performed with an extraction technique to remove the sack and material beneath the skin during an in-office procedure under local anesthetic.
Skin Mole Removal
A mole is a common skin growth that can develop anywhere. Moles may be removed through surgical excision or a shave removal technique that uses a scalpel and does not require stitches.
Skin Cancer Surgery
When caught early, skin cancer can be effectively treated with dermatological surgery. The standard for skin cancer is Mohs surgery with up to a 99 percent cure rate for first-time skin cancer treatment. The surgery is done in stages: each layer of tissue removed is examined in an on-site lab and the surgery continues until no cancer cells can be detected.
Warts and Molluscum Contagiosum Removal
While warts and molluscum contagiosum may sometimes be treated in-office with cantharidin or beetle juice, sometimes surgery is recommended. A curette may be used to remove molluscum bumps from the skin with little to no damage to surrounding healthy skin. In some cases, a scalpel may be used to remove the core of the bumps.
