Acne is an extremely common skin condition that can occur at any point in a person’s life. We know that patients feel more confident with clear, beautiful skin, and we work with each patient to customize a long-term, effective treatment plan. With the latest advances in acne—all available at Dr. Dennis Gross Dermatology—there’s no reason for anyone to suffer. If you are struggling with acne in Queens, New York City, Brooklyn or Staten Island, we welcome you to visit us for help.

What is Acne?

Acne is, very simply, a clogged pore (or hair follicle). Acne can appear anywhere on the skin. The clog can be created by (or by a combination of) dead skin cells, excess oil or sebum, makeup, or too heavy of products for your specific skin type. Once these clogged pores get irritated or infected, they can cause a more visible appearance on the surface.

Acne can be categorized by many different names: cysts, nodules, pustules, open and closed comedones, pimples, blemishes, etc. The most important thing to know is that any of these conditions can be treated better than ever!

What is the Main Cause of Acne?

While some acne can be more circumstantial due to products or makeup, a lot of the time it can be caused by something more internal. It could be from erratic hormone levels (puberty, menstrual cycle, pregnancy or even menopause), certain allergies (food, seasonal), unhealthy diet and or alcohol/substance use, or simply genetics.

How Much Does Acne Treatment Cost in New York?

The cost to treat acne depends on many factors including the type of acne, which treatments will be most effective for you, and your health insurance coverage. At Dr. Dennis Gross Dermatology, we will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan to help you enjoy long-term, beautiful results. During your initial consultation, we will go over your individual treatment cost.

What Are My Treatment Options for Acne?

The world of acne treatment has grown leaps and bounds over the years. Times of extremely strong peels and your only oral medication option being Accutane are days of old. Not only are there hundreds of medications (both oral and topical), but now we have amazing lasers, LEDs, and exfoliation techniques that can make a major impact without affecting your daily life.

Having state-of-the-art technology here at Dr. Dennis Gross Dermatology allows us to have all of the tools to treat each individual as themselves. Everyone that walks through the door may need a different protocol, and it is our job to determine just that. Sometimes it can be multiple devices or medication.

We will customize your treatment plan to your skin type and the type of acne you have for best results. Acne treatment for sensitive skin can help you avoid the side effects of some harsh medications. Cystic acne treatment can help with not only painful breakouts but reducing the appearance of scars. We also offer acne spot treatment if you have a big event coming up and need to address a breakout or blemish.

ACNE CAN BE CURED!

Medical Facial

Our medical facial is a great option for any patient looking to get a deep cleaning of their skin. This is ideal to rid your pores of any impurities that can lead to a more aggressive breakout. The medical facial consists of a sanitized steam in order to open up the pores (making removal of clogs much easier and less irritating), followed by any necessary extractions.

After removing all of the excess dirt, oil, product, etc. from the clogged pore, one of our expert aestheticians will recommend either a peel, LED technology, or a mask to close the pores and kill bacteria. You never need to be concerned with a post-facial breakout. You will have only clear skin moving forward.

Depending on the severity of acne, we sometimes recommend doing a series of facials in order to clean out all the impurities and prevent anything new from forming. This can be thoroughly discussed with one of our excellent team members.

• Chemical Peel

Chemical peels have come a long way since the days of Samantha's bee-keeper hat from Sex & the City. We are now able to create a cocktail of the ingredients for specific needs and to adjust the potential downtime.

Peels can be a great option for acne patients because certain beta-hydroxy acids such as salicylic acid can break down what is clogging the pore (as it is fat-soluble), literally eradicating the root of the issue. Other alpha-hydroxy acids can kill bacteria and eliminate the dead surface cells that can trap the bacteria or clogged pore.

By encouraging cell turnover via exfoliation, chemical peels are a great addition in treating acne scarring. We want to tell your scar to continue to heal itself—and that's exactly what a chemical peel can do.

With seven strengths of professional chemical peels currently available to our patients, it is important to have a thorough consultation in order to determine the best solution for you.

LED Light Therapy

LED is an amazing acne ingredient when it comes to treating acne and acne scarring while preventing future breakouts. Different wavelengths of light target different issues.

Blue light is able to kill P-bacteria, which is the bacteria that causes most acne breakouts.

Red Light is both anti-inflammatory and collagen-stimulating, so this light will help to heal any current breakouts you may have and improve the overall texture and appearance of your skin.

Our professional LED light panel has over 8,000 individual lights, making it highly effective. Each treatment can take 15-30 minutes and can be done weekly or monthly.

At home, LED is also a great way to maintain these results! Dr. Dennis Gross’ Faceware Pro is a fantastic option to bring pharmaceutical-grade LED home with you to treat and prevent acne.

Laser

AviClear™ uses the power of laser light to selectively target oil glands. These then produce less oil and, over time, less acne without damaging the rest of the skin. Current and future breakout episodes are shorter, less intense, and more infrequent following the AviClear procedure. Further, acne clearance results continue to improve over time.

SmoothBeam® Laser is an amazing treatment that can treat both active acne and acne scarring. The SmoothBeam® can target the actual oil gland that can be causing the breakout and tell it to produce less oil, Amazing. It can also help to build up the wall of the actual scar in order to smooth the appearance of your skin.

The other lasers that are commonly used for acne scarring are IPL and/or Vbeam. These treatments are both great when we need to help the discoloration left from a breakout. Ideally targeting anything more red or purple.

Generally, any laser that we do to treat active acne or acne scarring is best done in a series. Each individual’s skin is very different, and this treatment plan can be determined with one of our experts.

Medication

The world of acne treatment and ingredients has changed drastically over the years. Acne can be a truly debilitating condition and can sometimes take multiple products, medications and in-office procedures to fully treat and prevent it.

Topical medication can be applied to the skin to help kill bacteria, reduce oil, and/or exfoliate the dead skin cells so they don’t clog the pores.

Oral medications are more commonly used to treat acne cysts and nodules. These prescription medicines can include antibiotics (to kill the bacteria and reduce inflammation), or isotretinoin (which treats all causes of acne). Sometimes acne can be caused by abnormal hormone fluctuation which can be determined through blood work and then regulated with certain prescription medication as well.

Although topical and oral medications can be seriously effective- some patients can benefit from a consistent and well thought out at-home skin care regimen. The line has premier options for pharmaceutical-grade ingredients to be used at home in treating and preventing acne.

Acne Extraction Treatment

Pimples are bad enough, but improper at-home extraction can lead to damage to the skin that increases the risk of scarring, increased inflammation, and bacterial infection. Professional acne extraction involves opening the pore with the pimple to extract the oils, sebum, and debris to cleanse the pore. This process uses sterile tools and careful technique, including applying pressure correctly, to avoid damage to the skin and allow your skin to heal faster and clearer than you can achieve at home.

Acne Scar Removal

One of the worst things about acne is the scars it can leave behind. Dr. Dennis Gross Dermatology offers acne scar treatment to minimize the appearance of acne scars, including deep ice-pick scars or boxcar scars. The right treatment option will depend on the type of scarring you have but it may include laser scar revisionIPL laser treatment, and chemical peels.

YES! Laser technology has come leaps and bounds when it comes to what and how we can treat the skin! Depending on the individuals skin we can eliminate active acne, reduce the appearance of acne scars & even prevent future breakouts.

Do acne laser treatments hurt?

The answer is no because of the advancements  in laser technology. This is especially true of the most modern effective lasers for acne which we use in the practice. Lasers have become extremely comfortable! For patients that are really concerned with pain during treatments, topical anesthetic cream is always an option.

How much does it cost to remove acne scars by laser?

Pricing can always vary depending on the size of the area being treated. For example: just forehead or just jawline vs. full face. Dr. Dennis Gross and his team of specialists are also experts in combination treatments with peels & various lasers! On average, pricing usually starts at $400 per treatment and can increase from there.

How many laser treatments do I need for acne?

Each individual's skin & acne treatment is different. On average 2-3 treatments is ideal for full clearance, but a consultation with our skin experts will be able to give you the ideal plan from start to finish, including the proper at home care!

Can laser remove old scars?

Absolutely! Lasers like IPL or V-Beam are amazing at removing ANY discoloration, whether it be more red/pink/purple in color, or even more brown hyper-pigmentation. We can also use resurfacing laser technologies to help stimulate collagen & assist in smoothing indented, or “icepick” scars.

Does acne come back after laser treatment?

Yes it may, but never as severe as originally seen. That is why lasers are so powerful. In addition, we always set up the patient with products and medications to finish the job. Ultimately, we strive to clear the skin and then use methods to prevent acne from ever returning. One of the keys in treating acne is to treat the breakout before it shows up, and by killing bacteria and preventing clogged pores we can actually stop the breakout from happening. The laser is key in treating current acne and preventing any breakouts from returning.

Can acne be treated by Laser?

The newest lasers are the super-effective way to treat acne.  Lasers actually treat the causes of acne and even treat and prevent acne scars. They work by unblocking pores, killing bacteria and reducing redness and swelling. Improvement is seen with one treatment and they help prevent future breakouts. The skin looks red or for about 12 hours and pain it’s not an issue. In fact, there are several lasers that treat acne and Dr. Dennis Gross selects the best laser to treat the individual’s specific needs and type of acne.
